M+M (that is: Marc Weis and Martin De Mattia). Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Typescript on typewriter paper. Signed, dated, and numbered in pencil on the back of the sheet. 1999. Copy: 4/50. Sheet dimensions: 29.7 x 21 cm. Work by the artist duo M+M created during their residency at Villa Massimo in Rome. Marc Weis, born in 1965, and Martin De Mattia, born in 1963, first emerged in 1989 “in the space between visual art, architecture, and film.” According to their own account, during their “stay in the quiet idyll of the Villa Massimo,” the duo came across the manuscripts of Jack Torrance, who had written his book in late 1979 at the abandoned Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains. That same winter, the writer died under tragic circumstances. Torrance was a master of repetition. Time and again, he begins with the same words, consistently refusing any attempt to go beyond the statement he had already made. Twenty years after his death, M+M published the book “What You Can Do Today,.” — Verso mounted on cardboard, in very good condition.
