Homosexuality - LGBTQ - Radszuweit, Friedrich. Male Physical Beauty. 43 Nude Photographs of Beautiful Young Men and Men. With 43 Photographic Illustrations. Berlin, Martin Radszuweit-Verlag, 1931. 2 leaves (title page, preface), 22 leaves (plates, publisher’s advertisement). 24.5 x 16 cm. Original paperback with title on the cover (slightly creased, with light discoloration along the edges, rubbed, and stained). Rare, single edition; only one copy listed in the KVK (BnF). - This “purely artistic work of nudes” (preface) was compiled by one of the most dazzling and influential figures of the gay rights movement in Berlin in the 1920s, Heinrich Friedrich Radszuweit (1876–1932). The activist, entrepreneur, publisher, and author, who served as chairman of the “Bund für Menschenrecht” (BfM) beginning in 1923, not only called for the repeal of §175 but also planned in 1924 to found a “Homoerotic Friendship Party,” for which he hoped to be elected to the Reichstag, and in 1931 assured “Mr. Hitler that if you publicly advocate for the repeal of Section 175, you would certainly gain even more popularity.” - Repeatedly at odds with other activists such as Magnus Hirschfeld and Adolf Brand, Radszuweit’s publishing house—which already bore the name of his adopted life partner—published not only the “Blätter für Menschenrecht” but also “Das Freundschaftsblatt,” “Die Insel—The Magazine for the Unmarried and Lonely” (1926–1931), “Das 3. Geschlecht” (1930–1932), and “Die Freundin—Weekly Magazine for Ideal Female Friendship” (1924–1933), all of which were aimed at the “queer community.” So it’s no surprise that, starting in 1926, some of his magazines ended up on the Weimar Republic’s infamous “list of trashy and obscene publications.” - The last page (verso) features an advertisement for his particularly successful novel *Men for Sale: A Realistic Novel from the World of Male Blackmailers and Prostitutes*. - Interior in very good condition.
