Homosexuality - LGBTQ - Elbe, Lili. A Person Changes Their Gender. An Autobiographical Confession. Edited from posthumous papers by Niels Hoyer. With 11 illustrations on plates and a facsimile dedication page. Dresden, Carl Reissner, 1932. 251 pp. 21 x 13 cm. Original cloth binding (spine brightened, covers slightly discolored at the edges). First German edition. - Lili Elbe (1882–1931), born Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener, was one of the first people to undergo gender reassignment surgery in 1930. Her autobiography, first published in Danish (“Fra Mand til Kvinde”) in 1931, is the first published account of such an operation and the journey leading up to it. - Magnus Hirschfeld’s Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin performed the gender-reassignment surgeries. The first surgery took place at a private practice in Berlin. Elbe then went to the Dresden Women’s Clinic. On May 26, 1930, Kurt Warnekros performed a second surgery. A few months after her fourth surgery in 1931, complications arose—likely due to graft rejection—which led to Lili Elbe’s death. She was buried in Section IIC of the Trinitatis Cemetery in Dresden-Johannstadt. - In November 2013, the Lili Elbe Archive was founded in Berlin as “an independent space for preserving the history of non-normative genders”; it is supported by an association of the same name. *
