DADA - Schwitters, Kurt. Auguste Bolte. Tran No. 30 (a cod liver oil). With title vignette (repeated on the front cover). Berlin, Der Sturm, 1923. 46 pp., 1 leaf. 23 x 15 cm. Illustrated original paperback (minor edge wear; front cover torn at the bottom and at the spine, with a small corner tear; top edge of the back cover with a strip of adhesive tape showing through). First edition; the notation “5th edition” on the title page was intended to cause confusion. Schwitters’ second publication in Walden’s *Sturm*. — Schmalenbach/Bolliger 8 — Raabe 273.6. “In the introduction, a quote of philosophical significance by Ernst Lehmann: ‘What you chew becomes porridge.’ Who wouldn’t agree? Ernst Lehmann was Schwitters’ son, Ernst Schwitters, who was four years old at the time. As a diminutive form of his name ‘Ernst,’ it became ‘Ernstlmann’ and eventually ‘Ernst Lehmann.’ In any case, the four-year-old’s utterances seem to be so sublime in their Merz qualities that Father Schwitters considers them directly ‘Merz-worthy’ and incorporates them into the MERZ universe." (Thomas Derda, Schwitters Catalog 2019, p. 138).—Slightly discolored; the advertisement insert has small tears at the top, but is otherwise in very good condition inside.
