Leningrad and Moscow, State Publishing House for Fiction (according to the cover, only its Leningrad branch), 1932. 45 pp., 1 leaf. 17 x 13 cm. Original paperback (minor scuffs). First edition. — The four propagandistic essays, which address the cultural and political challenges faced by a flâneur navigating between the two systems, begin with a rather stark glimpse of Germany at the end of the Weimar Republic (A. Tolstoy stayed in Berlin for a few days in March 1932; in June, the publisher sent the text to typesetting) and end with a eulogy for the Palace of the Soviets, which was to be built (the architecture of which had been finalized through a public competition in February 1932). A rather unusual edition within the context of A. Tolstoy’s predominantly epic body of work. - Slightly browned due to the paper. *
