Avant-garde - Russia - Neumann, Eckhard. Five portfolios from the documentation archive containing autographs, photographs, exhibition brochures, invitations, etc., primarily related to Russian art. Frankfurt am Main (and other locations), late 1950s through late 1960s. Loose in gray archival folders (30.5 x 22.5 cm) with handwritten labels. Apparently a small portion of the documentation collected by the art journalist and graphic designer Eckhard Neumann (1933–2006): including autographs by Mihail Andreenko, George Martin du Nord, Erika Pauli, and Eberhard Steneberg; photographs by E. Neumann, N. Mandel, and others (silver gelatin prints), as well as reproductions of works by El Lissitzky, Mihail Larionov, Mikhail Andreenko, Granovsky/Ilyazd, as well as several other photographs and approximately 20 exhibition-related printed materials (including illustrated announcements and reviews). - The handwritten folders contain material on “El Lissitzky,” “Nathalie Gontschorowa—Michael Larionov—Les Artistes Russes de L’Ecole de Paris,” “Eberhard Steneberg,” “Georges Martin du Nord,” and “Otto Freundlich.” - The materials collected between his graduation in 1957 and the publication of key works shed light on the network of Eckhard Neumann, who, through exhibitions and publications since the 1960s, not only contributed significantly to the rediscovery of the Bauhaus and the typography of the 1920s and 1930s, but also highlighted the influence of the Russian avant-garde. Among other works, Neumann wrote the introduction to the catalog for the exhibition “Constructive Painting 1915–1930” (Frankfurter Kunstverein, 1966/67), and in his 1967 essay “Russia’s ‘Leftist Art’ in Berlin, 1922,” published in the Art Journal, he analyzed the historical significance of the “First Russian Art Exhibition” at the Galerie van Diemen in Berlin. - The reproductions of the works have not been further examined. - The reviews are mostly creased and slightly discolored; there are a few other minor flaws, but overall they are in fair condition. *
