Georgia - Photo album featuring German settlers in Georgia. Contains approx. 160 original photographs. Vintage. Silver gelatin prints. Some toned. Mounted. Circa 1914–1922. Canvas with cord binding. 26 x 36 cm (slightly dusty). The prints range in size from 6 x 6 cm to 17 x 23 cm. On the reverse, there are frequent pencil notes in German regarding the people depicted. A few postcards and additional original photos were also mounted. Among the locations mentioned are Kazbek, Poti, and, above all, Tbilisi. A whole series of photographs show the clinic operated by the Billroth Foundation in Tbilisi and its chief physician, Merzweiler, who worked there until his death in 1922. Beginning in 1919, the German settlers were repatriated to Germany, some via the infamous Locksteder camp (here erroneously referred to as “Lockstädter”). Early in the album, there is an old ownership notation reading “D. Baitinger,” likely a member of the family frequently mentioned in connection with the German settlers. — Prints are slightly faded in places, but generally in good condition. — Enclosed are a few later color photographs, which likely belong to the collection.
