France - Winter, Charles. Siege of Strasbourg, 1870. Twenty sheets of photographic images of the breaches, crossings, gates, and other views of military significance (title on cover). Original photographs. Vintage. Albumen prints. Mounted. (Taken October 1–3, 1870). In original folder with mounted cover title (scuffed, bumped, text somewhat faded in places). Print sizes: 17 x 25 cm and 23 x 19 cm. Mount size: 44 x 35 cm. Charles David Winter (January 16, 1821 – February 7, 1904) was initially a painter and lithographer; he likely began his career as a photographer in the late 1840s. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, Winter photographed his hometown of Strasbourg and its surroundings, including damaged fortifications and ruins in the largely destroyed suburbs of Strasbourg. - The mount is wavy and shows signs of smoke damage; the prints are in good condition and, overall, still well preserved.
