Germany - Potsdam - Michiels, Johann Franz. The Belvedere on the Pfingstberg. Original photograph. Vintage. Salted paper print, mounted on thin cardboard. The cardboard bears a dry stamp: Cologne, F. C. Eisen, 1856. Print: 23.7 x 40.2 cm. Mount: 44.5 x 58.2 cm. A rare example of early Potsdam photography. Michiels is best known for his photographs of Cologne Cathedral. Four of his large-format, sharply defined images of Potsdam were shown in 2006 as part of the exhibition “Auslöser Potsdam”; others are known only from an advertisement that the publisher Eisen published in 1858 in the Leipzig “Illustrirten Zeitung” (reproduced in Heidtmann, *Wie das Photo ins Buch kam*, p. 55). - This photograph shows the Belvedere after the first phase of construction (1847–52), set among orchards with an unpaved access road. - Slightly faded; the backing cardboard has faint creases, but is otherwise in excellent condition.
