Germany - Bavaria - City of Augsburg Raths Calendar, or: Almanac for the Common Year Following the Gracious Birth of Jesus Christ MDCCC. Coat-of-arms calendar of the City of Augsburg. Wall calendar featuring 45 coats of arms of the City of Augsburg’s council members for the year 1800. Copperplate engraving from two plates, printed by Hieronymus Sperling after a design by Johann Georg Bergmüller, published by Joseph Anton Hueber. Augsburg, 1799. Sheet dimensions: 118 x 47 cm. Schefold, Schwaben 41306 (1735 edition) – Drugulin, Flugbl. 4154 (1733 edition) – Thieme/Becker XXXI, 363f. – Rapp p. 81 - A monumental display panel with a columnar structure on the sides mounted on a high pedestal; in the center, the separately printed calendar is affixed as if in a niche, flanked by two columns with ornate capitals; the “sky” of the sheet features a large allegorical depiction. The calendar, printed in red and black type by Joseph Anton Hueber, “Grand Ducal, Episcopal, and City Printer at Our Lady of Thor,” displays two rows of monthly tables—six per row—set narrowly one below the other. The calendar lists the corresponding Golden Number, solar cycle, Roman numeral, lunar indicator, Sunday letter, and the period between Christmas and Shrovetide for the year. The calendar is surrounded by the coats of arms of the 45 individuals who make up the city council: 31 patricians, 4 “Mehrer,” 3 merchants, and 7 members of the community. As with almost all large-format coat-of-arms calendars of this period, the printing plate was reused for several years to save costs. - In two places (a 4.5 cm mark on the left margin and a 20 cm mark below the calendar section), there are impressions of cracks in the printing plate. The corners of the narrow margins are slightly soiled and show water stains; short marginal tears and two longer ones (one in the sky, one in the foreground) have been restored; there are some crease and fold marks. *
