Asia - India - General Map of the Indian Subcontinent, Providing an Overview of the Main Features. Dedicated to the memory of James Rennell. Historically colored copperplate map by A. Schmidt from Berghaus’s *Atlas of Asia*, published by Perthes, Gotha, 1836. Plate size: 92.5 x 64.5 cm. Sheet size: 98.5 x 69 cm. Engelmann, Geogr. I, p. 125 – Engelmann, Berghaus, p. 128. - Large-format (Eagle format) map of India showing Sri Lanka (Ceylon), the Lakshadweep and Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Punjab, Kashmir, and parts of Tibet; bounded in the north by Peshawar, Srinagar, and the Himalayas. Two small inset maps are included: a) Assam and Arakan, and b) the lower course of the Indus from Schikarpur to its mouth. Geographical, political, and statistical information in the map legend makes this sheet an interesting historical document; it includes, among other things, the peaks of the Himalayas (Nos. 1–20), elevation data, military divisions, meteorological and hydrometric data, and a statistical overview of the Indian Empire (based on Montgomery Martin’s *History of the British Colonies*, London 1834), as well as the political divisions of India and Ceylon. The monograph on India announced by the cartographer Heinrich Berghaus in a note was never published. The map is dedicated to the British geographer and historian James Rennell, who worked for many years as a surveyor for the British East India Company. — Center fold, some crease marks along the margins, slightly browned. *
