Asia - China - The ancient Buddha Dipankara prophesies the enlightenment of Shakyamuni Buddha. Wool and silk on a cotton warp. Probably China, mid-20th century. Dimensions: 152 x 243 cm (excluding hanging loops and fringes). This large-format tapestry, featuring 29 figures, depicts the Buddha of the Past, Dipankara, on the right, surrounded by a large nimbus, as he prophesies to the ascetic Sumedha, who is kneeling before him, that in the distant future he will attain enlightenment as Shakyamuni Buddha. Sumedha had thrown himself into the mud and spread out his long hair so that Dipankara could walk across it without getting his feet wet. The scene depicts a multitude of bodhisattvas, vajras, arhats, and Guanyin. - The multi-figure motif is based on a well-known depiction from the Song Dynasty. - As a wall hanging, the tapestry is knotted at the top by its fringes to a bamboo pole. - The border shows minimal soiling. - This item is not suitable for shipping via parcel service.
