Original blue covers speckled with gold, with mounted title labels and publisher’s labels, bound with cord; in original silk slipcase with geometric pattern, title label, and 2 bone clasps (corners slightly rubbed). Chi Pai-Chi (Ch’i Pai-Shih, also Qi Baishi; 1863–1957), a woodcarver and cabinetmaker, discovered painting through instructional manuals. Influenced by the Chinese Impressionists, he developed his own characteristic delicate and cheerful visual style. The colored woodcuts depict landscapes, flowers, birds, insects, fish, animals, and people. Thanks to the artist’s keen observation of nature, they rank among the most outstanding works of this leading painter of modern China, who is also widely recognized in the Western world (see Vollmer IV, 477 ff.).—The last sheet is heavily stained with brown spots; otherwise, it is in very good condition.
