The Hanseatic merchant Johann Daniel Runge (1767–1856), the older brother of Philipp Otto Runge, belonged to an Enlightenment-inspired, rationalist circle centered around Friedrich Perthes, Johann Heinrich Besser, Heinrich Joachim Herterich, and Gerdt Hardorff. He published two collections of patriotic songs during the wars of liberation, followed by this short-lived journal, which was primarily devoted to calling for the fight against the French and later to analyzing the Napoleonic era in northern Germany. - Includes contributions by Clemens Brentano, Friedrich La Motte Fouque, Ernst Moritz Arndt, Garlieb Merkel, and a reprint of the poem “Im Schooß der Mitternacht geboren” by Friedrich Rückert under the pseudonym Freymund Reimar. - Signed on the endpapers by the Hamburg theologian Carl Bertheau (1806–1886). - Erased stamps on the flyleaf and the verso of the title page. *
