First edition of Fröbel’s (1782–1852) first major work. — Heiland, Fröbel Bibliography 0023 — Krieg, MNE I, 241 — Doderer I, 419. - Perhaps even more so than Pestalozzi’s *How Gertrud Teaches Her Children* (1801)—which deeply influenced Fröbel—*The Education of Man* represents a milestone in modern pedagogical thought and had an enormous influence on later educators. In 1816, Fröbel opened his first school in Griesheim, Hesse. A year later, the school moved to nearby Keilhau. Alongside this self-published work, he also disseminated his innovative educational ideas in the weekly journal *Die erziehenden Familien*. Fröbel’s teaching methods are rooted in an educational theory based on the principles of “holism” and “activity.” The Prussian authorities viewed both the man and his “dangerous” ideas with suspicion; they placed the institution under surveillance, with the result that more and more parents withdrew their children from the school. When only six students remained, the institute was forced to close. However, this was not the end of Fröbel’s pedagogical career; on the contrary, it marked only its true beginning. — Inside cover and title page stamped; endpapers and first page slightly foxed, with pencil markings in places.
