Encyclopedias - Moréri, Louis. *Le Grand Dictionnaire Historique, ou le mélange curieux de l'histoire sacrée et profane, qui contient en abrégé, les vies et les actions remarquables ... des empereurs, des Rois, ...* ...the establishment and progress of religious and military orders, ... genealogies ... legendary history ... 18th edition. 8 volumes and 3 supplementary volumes, totaling 11 volumes. With 1 engraved frontispiece. Amsterdam, Brunel, 1740–1745. 39 x 26.5 cm. Contemporary leather bindings with spine labels and gilt lettering (Volume 1 has water damage along the lower edge of the back cover; 3 volumes are chipped; otherwise, only slightly rubbed). See Brunet III, 1901, and Zischka 7: “An important and highly successful work, a precursor to later French encyclopedias. Contains a great deal of valuable material.” - First published in 1674, “the book marks the beginning of a new development (in lexicography). In addition to classical educational content, the work covered many current events, thereby transcending the boundaries of a historical lexicon as implied by its title. The successive editions, which followed one another in rapid succession, constituted something of a yearbook of the educated world. New research findings were immediately incorporated into the next edition. The concerns of the Catholic clergy, biographies of churchmen, and church history were a particularly strong aspect of the work.” (Zischka, p. XXXVII). – Title pages bear a contemporary stamp: a crowned coat of arms and “C R”; the last pages of Volume 1 have water stains, are slightly browned in places, and have minor spots. *
