Basel, Cratander, 1529. 32 unnumbered pages, 553 numbered pages, 1 unnumbered page. Fol. 33 x 21 cm. Contemporary half-parchment binding with blind embossing, featuring a new cover and bookmarks. VD16 G 124 - Durling 1784 - Hieronymus, Griech. Geist 327 - Hoffmann II, 262 - Panzer VI, 270, 733. Vander Haeghen II, 27 - Wellcome I, 2511 - Not listed in Adams or the STC. - First exclusively Latin Basel edition from the printing house of Andreas Cratander, dated 1529. - “On over 550 sheets—that is, over 1,100 folio pages—the Basel printer Cratander and his editor, the Basel physician Andreas Leennius, compiled 27 of Galen’s treatises in Latin translations by nine different translators into one of the first Basel prints of Greek medicine: by Erasmus of Rotterdam (3 treatises), Thomas Linacre (6), Guilielmus Copus (Wilhelm Kopp of Basel), Lorenzo Lorenziano (1), Niccolò Leoniceno (6), Antoine Fortoul (2), Theodoricus Gaudanus (i.e., Theodoricus Gerardus: 2), Ionas Philologus (i.e., Johannes Guinterius of Andernach: 1), and Giovanpietro Valla (translated by Giorgio Valla). Compared to the earlier Latin complete editions from Venice in 1490 and 1502, which included translations from Arabic, as well as those from Pavia 1515/16 and Venice 1522 and 1528, Cratander’s edition thus commendably presents the most up-to-date state of the Galen translation.” (See Hieronymus for details). - Cover re-covered with colored paper, endpapers replaced; wormholes and signs of moisture along the margins throughout; the lower edges or corners of the first 13 and last 16 leaves have been repaired; the publisher’s name is missing from the title page. The title page bears old handwritten entries and a note of ownership dated 1547; there are contemporary marginal notes throughout, some of which are illustrated. *
