Translated from the French into German by Emericum Lebusium (i.e., Johann Fischart). Strasbourg, Jobinum, ca. 1575. 72 leaves. 19th-century paperboard binding. VD16 E 4009 - Seebaß-Edelmann NF 310 - Maltzahn 97. - One of only two known prints of the German translation of Estienne’s “Discours merveilleux de la vie, actions et des déportements de Catherine de Médicis.” - The book deals with the politics of Catherine de’ Medici and the events surrounding the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre. Theodor de Beza is considered the author of the French original, published under the pseudonym Eusèbe Philadelphe (Quérard III, 100); according to other attributions, it may be Barnaud. Of particular importance in this edition are the seven sonnets by Johann Fischart, printed here for the first time: “To Readers Who Love Honor and Justice,” headed with the anagram “Huldrich Wisart.” These contain sharp attacks on Catherine, the “wild hen.” - Old note on the endpaper; first leaf has water stains; title on the right and upper margin are slightly trimmed, but no loss of text; slightly browned. *
