A distinctive feature of this work is that it is divided not into three parts, as had been the case previously, but into four: Genesis through Chronicles, Ezra through Jesus Sirach, the Prophets and Maccabees, and the New Testament. Another new feature is that beneath each page, in small print, there is a detailed Latin commentary drawn from the Church Fathers and contemporary exegetes. The Benedictines of Ettenheimmünster did not simply want to add a new translation to the existing ones; as evidenced by the length of time the work took, they strove with great zeal to create a truly useful German translation. In the Preface, they speak of their struggle to achieve good German." (Bible in German) – Parallel text printed in two columns, Latin and German side by side, with extensive footnotes. Each copperplate illustration features three biblical scenes, accompanied by a Bible quotation in Latin, German, and French. The fold-out copperplate illustrations are from the 1729 Cotta Bible: *Delineatio et Beschreibung Palaestinae* or *The Promised Land* with an extensive legend (Laor, 813); Synedrium, 14 smaller illustrations (sanctuaries, priests, Pharisees, etc.); Outline of the City of Jerusalem … at the time of Christ. Bird’s-eye view, framed by 10 smaller images and 2 views of the Temple (Laor, 937); Ezekiel’s Vision, the Temple, Ezekiel, and a map of the 12 tribes. 3 illustrations on 1 plate (Laor, 921); Map detailing the journeys of the Holy Apostles, particularly St. Paul, with an extensive legend (Laor, 922). - Endpaper with ownership notation: “Bibliothecee Capucin.Badee.” - 1 endpaper missing, 1 endpaper restored, slightly browned and with foxing. *
