Silhouettes. Three half-length figures cut from embossed black glossy paper. Mounted in a souvenir booklet for the niece of the Hamburg portrait painter August Theodor Classen. Hamburg and Dresden, 1845/49. 5 leaves with 2 handwritten poems, another paper cutout, a small bouquet of dried flowers, 1 colored lithographic view, and 2 small wreaths of hair. 23.5 x 18.5 cm. Later cover, gilt edges. The profile engravings, approximately 10 cm high, depict a gentleman, a young lady, and an older lady. Details of clothing, headdresses, and hairstyles are embossed in relief from the reverse side. These may be works by Classen (1804–81) himself, who, in August 1845, left a handwritten commemorative poem signed “Uncle” at the end of the booklet. The unusually high-quality engravings may depict him, his wife, and the recipient of the gift. Mounted between them is an old-colored, egg-white-mounted lithograph of Schweizermühle in the Bielatal (Saxon Switzerland, 7 x 11 cm); the sewn-in small bouquet of flowers originates from there. The second handwritten poem refers to this bouquet; it is signed “Dresden, March 21, 1849” by the Silesian noblewoman Ignes von Ohlen Adlerskron (1829–95). The recipient is referred to here as “Agnes.” Mounted above the dried flowers is another profile cut of a gentleman without embossing. — In excellent condition.
