Optical Toys - Brès, Jean Pierre. Myriorama. Collection of Several Thousand Landscapes. 21 hand-colored picture cards in the aquatint style (instead of 32; 11 in excellent facsimiles). Paris, Le Fuel, ca. 1823. 1 sheet of game instructions (also a double-sided facsimile). Cards: 14 x 5 cm each. In original cardboard box (21 x 15 cm) with engraved title on the lid and edges edged with embossed gold paper (slightly rubbed, bumped, and dusty). See Ralph Hyde, “Myrioramas. Endless Landscapes,” in *Print Quarterly* 2004, no. 4, pp. 403–421. — Probably the first edition of this Biedermeier game, which was distributed in various versions throughout Europe. An Arcadian landscape is mounted in vertical strips on numbered cardboard pieces that can be arranged in seemingly endless permutations. The enclosed reproduction of the accompanying game instructions provides more detailed guidance, including how to use it as a party game. One of the cards bears the signature “Susemihl sculp.,” likely Johann Theodor S., who had been working in Paris since 1805. - The facsimile images 3, 5–8, 11, 14–16, 21, and 32 are mounted on cardboard of the same type as the originals and, like the originals, bear colored numbered labels on the reverse in four series. Very well preserved.
