Greeting Cards - Album containing approximately 120 mounted greeting cards and ribbons; a few are loose inside or permanently mounted. The cards are mostly chromolithographed and some are gilded or silvered; they feature elaborate die-cutting, relief embossing, and lace borders, including several fold-out or pop-up cards. About a dozen finely woven silk ribbons. Predominantly from England, mid- to late 19th century. 7 pages with handwritten poems from the years 1841–60. Various formats; the album measures 26.5 x 20.5 cm. Green leather binding from around 1850 with rich Romantic-style gilding and gold edging (edges, joints, and headbands worn; front inner joint cracked). A densely filled album of Victorian luxury cards for Christmas and New Year’s, as love notes, keepsakes, or for general good wishes. The collection showcases the breadth and technical sophistication of contemporary luxury paper production, including unique pieces such as a die-cut card filled with handwriting or a pencil drawing. Two cards feature chromolithographed inset portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert set within fold-out, gilded and silver-plated die-cut frames; three others illustrate letters of the alphabet with fine etchings in colored relief frames. Among the woven silk ribbons are a memento of the 1867 Coventry Industrial Exhibition and a mourning ribbon commemorating Albert, who died in 1861. — All in very good condition.
