Canivets—A pair of lace-edged frames made of the thinnest paper, enclosing two ink-brush medallions depicting a peasant couple. Probably from southern Germany, circa 1800. Diameter of medallions: 2.2 cm each. Lace-edged frames: 4.8 cm. Loosely mounted on small cardboard discs and set under glass in later brass-sheet frames (6 cm). Exquisite pen-and-ink work surrounding two rustic drawings, the latter accented with selective red and blue highlights. Two small colored leaf sprigs, each with a single flower, are mounted on both engravings. Perhaps the ensemble represents a wedding gift. — Very well preserved thanks to the mounting; one pane is cracked.
