Dear Uncle, Tell Us a Story! A storybook with illustrations. Dedicated to eager-to-learn and well-behaved children by a friend of children. With 7 (of 8) beautifully illuminated copperplate engravings. Berlin, J. G. Hasselberg, n.d. (ca. 1835). IV, 116 pp. 17.5 x 11.5 cm. Original illustrated cardboard binding (covering renewed on the spine and the right edge of the front cover; otherwise somewhat rubbed with only minor imperfections in the covering; corners bumped, dusty, and stained). This rare children’s book, anonymously written by a “friend of children,” contains nine moral tales in the form of evening stories, in which children are expected above all to listen attentively to “Uncle Treuenfeld” as well-behaved listeners: “Children must only listen, and not speak up; only when they are asked” (page 3). - From “A Mother’s Recovery Celebration” to “Catching Butterflies” to “Rescued from Death by a Dog, and Other Anecdotes About Dogs,” a broad spectrum of the Biedermeier-era children’s world is covered. - The beautiful, delicately colored copperplate engravings are each signed in print by “Stürmer gez.” and “Stäglich gest.” - One plate has a chip in the corner; another has two tears in the margin with backing; the front inner hinge is torn; overall, the book is somewhat browned and stained. *
