"A fateful mistake was M.’s attempt to coerce the Prussian government into paying him a substantial sum of money to improve his dire financial situation. Otherwise, he threatened to publish his memoirs—which would expose the Prussian state and court—through an English publisher. This attempt at blackmail led to M.’s arrest in Frankfurt in 1817 and his transfer to Küstrin, where he was sentenced by a court-martial to 14 years’ imprisonment in a fortress for high treason, insulting the king, and insubordination.” (NDB). — Title and end pages are dusty, somewhat creased and dog-eared; there is a small tear with the loss of a letter on the title page.
