Medicine - Neurology - Tiedemann, Friedrich. *On the Brain of the Negro, compared with that of the European and the Orangutan*. With 6 lithographed plates by J. Basire based on drawings by the author, among others. London, printed by Richard Taylor, 1836. 1 leaf, pp. 497–527. 30 x 24 cm. Contemporary paperback (stained). Hirsch/Hübotter V, 587 - DSB XIII, 402 ff. - First edition, published one year before the German edition. - From: Philosophical Transactions, Part II for 1836. - “In 1836 he published, in English, what may be considered one of the earliest basic works of physical anthropology, *On the Brain of the Negro Compared With That of the European and the Orangutan*. In this surprisingly modern study, Tiedemann showed that, in contrast to the large difference between the forebrains of apes and humans, no substantial differences could be found between the brains of the human races; although the majority of Negro skulls and cranial cavities he studied were smaller than those of European specimens, they had, according to his measurements, contained brains that were just as large and just as heavy. He further stated his finding that there was no area of intellectual activity in which Black people could not perform as well as European whites, and concluded that there was no natural structure or disposition of the brain in Black people that would substantiate the notion of their predestined subservient status.” (DSB). - Plates somewhat stained. - Supplement: Tiedemann, F. *Anatomy of the Fish Heart*. With 4 copper plates. Landshut, printed by Joseph Thomann, 1809. 1 leaf, 41 pp. 26.5 x 22.5 cm. Marbled cardboard binding of the period. - First edition. *
