Geology - Assmann, Christian Gottfried. Journey through the Giant Mountains. A Geological Study. Includes 1 engraved and multi-folded profile map, as well as 2 colored folded copperplate prints. Leipzig, Hilscher, 1798. XVI, 364 pp., 1 leaf. 20.5 x 12 cm. Simple contemporary paperboard binding (heavily bumped and stained; joints reinforced with tracing paper). The only edition of one of the earliest geological-topographical descriptions of the Giant Mountains, based on the author’s own hikes and sketches. The profile map shows the “horizon of the Sudeten Range,” while the colored copperplate engravings depict the Stonsdorf Rock and the Schreibershausen Hut, all based on the author’s own drawings. - Endpaper with ownership notation “CGAssmann”; no corrections or additions to the text except for a brief pencil note on the plate legend. - Slightly browned and with foxing; the front inside cover and the back of the plate legend bear heavy pencil notes in a modern hand; the last page and the plate folds show minor mold damage along the outer edge. *
