Astronomy - Schlegel, Gustave. Chinese Uranography. Celestial Atlas. Chinese and Greek. Based on the Tien-Youen-Li-Li. With 7 lithographed plates. The Hague, Nijhoff, 1875. 2 leaves, 28 x 37 cm. Contemporary canvas (partly worn, partly stained). Celestial atlas accompanying the two-volume work “Uranographie chinoise; ou, Preuves directes que l’astronomie primitive est originaire de la Chine...” by the Dutch sinologist Gustave Schlegel (Gustaaf Schlegel). - With this work, Schlegel sought to prove that the origins of astronomy lie in China and were transmitted from there to Western cultures. The atlas serves to compare traditional Chinese constellations with Western astronomy. The maps project the traditional Chinese system (based on the Chinese astronomical work *Tien-Youen-Li-Li*) onto the European system of the late 19th century. - Inner hinges loosened, title page with erased stamps, slight browning. *
