Music - David, Hans Walter. Tower Music arranged for two treble and bass flugelhorns. Handwritten musical manuscript with double signature. Wels, July 1928. 7 1/3 pages on 4 printed-grid sheets, 34 x 27 cm. Defective thread binding. - Also included: The same composer. Handwritten accompanying letter with signature. Wels, July 13, 1928. 3/4 page, 26.5 x 21 cm. An attempt to revive tower music—which we have been unable to verify—with the note “For Eferding” (near Wels). David, of Jewish descent and a communist (1893–1942), was the music director at the Schauspielhaus in Düsseldorf until 1933; emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1936, was extradited to Germany in 1940, and murdered in Majdanek in 1942. The composition includes four transcriptions based on works by Josquin de Prez, Heinrich Isaak, and Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as his own “Turmlied” for three flugelhorns. Author’s own preface: “The songs have been chosen as typical tower music. They are to be performed in a beautiful legato and without vibrato. Care must be taken to ensure that the lines in the middle voices are phrased very clearly and logically... The arrangement of all five pieces is not original, and the ‘brass-like’ character often had to be achieved by transposing or swapping the middle voices.” - The accompanying letter to the composer and Hitler’s childhood friend, (August) Kubizek, city bandmaster in Eferding from 1920 to 1945. David apologizes for the delay in completing the commissioned tower music and summarizes its content. “I believe that when reintroducing tower music, one should adopt a historical perspective without becoming overly theoretical.” - The outer page of the composition is torn along the fold; the title page is dusty and somewhat stained, with a small, continuous tear along the side margin. The letter shows fold marks and some foxing.
