Hasenclever, Walter. A 6-line dedication with signature. In the lower third of a portrait of Hasenclever by Ludwig Meidner, dated 1916. Berlin, Oct. 28, 1918. 37 x 28 cm. On cardboard. Dedicated to the actress and writer Beate Scherk: “This is what I looked like in the spring of 1916, when I was sitting in Meidner’s studio and had to go back to Macedonia. Since then, my hair has fallen out, and I’ve become a real pig in other ways, too. But I’ll try my best to become a decent person again, because I promised you that the other day. Goodbye, dear Beate, Yours, Walter Hasenclever. Berlin, October 28, 1918.” Beate Scherk (1896–1954) married the Berlin industrialist Herbert Sulzbach (1894–1985) in 1923. As a result of the Nazi persecution of Jews, the Sulzbach couple emigrated to London in 1937. Her mother, Gertrud Scherk, sister of the conductor Otto Klemperer, was murdered in the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1943. #
