Thomas Ruff (1958), Nudes OD21 (2002/06) Photograph. Chromogenic print. Signed 'Thomas Ruff' and numbered 62/100 in pencil on the reverse. 36 x 22 cm. Walnut frame 57 x 42 cm. Neuer Aachener Kunstverein. The Nudes series is based on pornographic photographs that Ruff downloaded from the internet and manipulated. The series blurs, both literally and metaphorically, the boundaries between classical nudes and pornography. Ruff's intervention elevates the images from their profane utilitarian purpose and imbues them with formal and aesthetic value. Contrary to the technical possibilities of photography and the demands of the porn industry, Ruff blurs the image, reducing detail. A painterly quality replaces easy consumption.
