Oswald Achenbach (1827-1905), Evening in the Villa Borghese park Oil on canvas. 89 x 134 cm. Faintly signed lower right: O. Achenbach. On the stretcher, an old exhibition label with the number 2725 and the handwritten inscription Achenbach. Framed. Surface soiled. The expansive park of the Villa Borghese, with the famous Pinicio terrace in Rome, has always been - and remains to this day - one of the most popular places in the Eternal City. Achenbach depicts the park in the light of late twilight. Through the overcast sky above the city, the last light of the fading day shines. The park's majestic pines stand out like silhouettes against this dramatic backdrop. A group of the last visitors, dressed in Renaissance costumes, has gathered around a bonfire, which bathes the lower left corner of the painting in a flickering orange light and seems to bring the statues in the park to life. Reality and fiction, day and night seem to merge into an inseparable unity in the painting, giving the depiction a mysterious atmosphere. Provenance: Old Collection Münsterland.
