Johann Caspar Schneider (1753-1839), Portrait of a lady as Flora, 1790 Oil on canvas. Three-quarter portrait of a lady with curly hair, dressed in a lavishly pleated antique-style gown with a veil and blue sash. In front of her is a column with a bouquet of flowers. 42 x 31.5 cm. Signed and dated lower left: C. Schneider f. 1790. Framed. The landscape and portrait painter Johann Caspar Schneider spent the majority of his career in Mainz, where he initially found success at the Elector's court. In 1779, he finally established himself as an independent portrait painter. When he painted a portrait of Countess Sophia von Coudenhoven in 1784, he had definitively arrived in high society. Schneider subsequently received numerous commissions as a landscape and portrait painter and regularly participated in art exhibitions. Members of the French imperial family took notice of the artist during their stays in Mainz and commissioned works from him. When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe traveled to the Rhine and Main region in 1814, he also visited Mainz and spoke highly of the artist.
