France. 18th century., Small Louis XV chest of drawers Various precious woods veneered on oak. Straight-lined, slightly convex front on short, curved feet with four drawers on three levels, the apron with a small shelf. Veneer panels framed in a cartouche pattern across the entire surface and arranged in a mirrored pattern. Slightly overhanging top made of white/grey veined pink marble. Gilded bronze fittings. Stamped JEAN HOLTHAUSEN on the upper frame of the commode and marked with the guild mark JME. Key missing. 85 x 80 x 44 cm. Jean Holthausen became a master craftsman in 1764. Little is known about his seemingly short career, partly because only a few pieces of furniture by his hand are known to exist. Like most French cabinetmakers of his time, he originally came from Germany. He worked on the Rue Traversière in Paris. Although Holthausen was active from the reign of Louis XV through the reign of Louis XVI, many of his pieces of furniture retained the influence of the Régence style, as is evident in the present commode. Provenance: From the estate of the actor Wolfgang Düring.
