Albert Daniel Rothenstein, NEAC RWS, British 1881-1953- Chloe; pen and ink on paper, signed, dated and dedicated, 'to / Carrington Dec 13 / Albert Rothenstein / Paris 1912', 24.7 x 13.9 cm. ARR. Exhibited: London, Martyn Gregory Gallery, 'A foray into the 20th century: works by British artists', 2015, cat. 93, no. 58. Provenance: with Martyn Gregory, London [VE 726]. Note: The present work is a preparatory drawing for one of Rothenstein's principal works, a picture entitled 'Chloe' painted on silk and exhibited at the New English Art Club in 1912. The painting is illustrated in Casson, 'Artists at Work', p. 85. Dora Carrington, to whom this drawing is inscribed, was twenty years old at the time; she exhibited her own landscapes at the New English Art Club in the three subsequent years. The present work recalls a similar composition which sold at Dreweatts on 13 March 2024, lot 57 (£2,400 hammer), as well as a costume design for 'Diana' which sold at Olympia Auctions on 11 October 2023, lot 14 (£900 hammer).
