James Archer, RSA, Scottish 1823-1904- Portrait of Sir Daniel Macnee, bust length; pencil and coloured chalks on paper, signed and dated 'J. Archer 1857' (lower left), oval, 34.5 x 27 cm. Provenance: With Martyn Gregory, London [MG]. Note: James Archer exhibited his portraits and subject pictures regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy from 1842 until his death, although he moved from Edinburgh to London in 1863. Many of his portraits of the 1840s and 1850s were, like the present example, executed in the fashionable medium of chalks, which Archer handled with dexterity. The sitter is Sir Daniel Macnee (1806-1882), the eminent Scottish portrait painter, who was elected President of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1876.
