Charles Edmund Rowbotham, British 1856-1921- Portrait study of a young girl with brown hair, bust-length; pencil and watercolour on paper, 14.6 x 10.8 cm. Provenance: Barclays Bank Trust Co. Executors of the Leeson Rowbotham family. with Martyn Gregory, London [COM 11a]. Note: Rowbotham was part of an artistic family, as the grandson of Thomas Leeson Scarse Rowbotham (1783-1853) and son of Thomas Charles Leeson Rowbotham (1823-1875), with Charles beginning his artistic career by painting the figures in the latter's landscapes. Like his father, Charles specialised in the production of landscapes, often depicting idyllic Italian vistas, as well as sweeping views of the British countryside. The present work is somewhat unusual within his oeuvre and may be a personal study of a family member or a friend.
