Sir David Young Cameron, RA RSA, Scottish 1865-1945- St Skeagh, Arran; charcoal on buff paper, signed 'D Y Cameron' (lower right), 23.2 x 26.3 cm. Provenance: Miss F. Coulson. with Martyn Gregory, London [VH418]. Exhibited: London, Marjorie Parr Gallery. London, Martyn Gregory, 'A foray into the 20th century: works by British artists', 2015, cat. 93, no. 7. Note: Cameron was one of the most celebrated Scottish artists of the early 20th century, known particularly for his evocative depictions of the Scottish highlands, that demonstrate the influence of artists such as James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and members of the 'Glasgow Boys' group. including William York Macgregor (1855-1923) and James Guthrie (1859-1930). The present work is a characteristic example of Cameron's atmospheric views of the Scottish landscape, defined by a dramatic contrast between light and shade. Similar works include that which sold at Bonhams, Edinburgh, on 12 April 2007, lot 40 (£3,600 hammer), or another which sold at the same rooms on 8 December 2006, lot 119 (£2,400 hammer).
