William Linnell, British 1826-1906- Wooded hillside landscape; oil on paper, 42 x 54 cm. Provenance: by direct descent from the artist to Joan Linnell-Ivimy. with Martyn Gregory, London [VF116]. Note: Linnell was the son of the landscape painter John Linnell (1792-1882), and was named after the latter's close friend William Blake (1757-1827). William Linnell was best-known for his depictions of the English and Welsh countryside, many of which were exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1851 and 1891. A similar tree study by Linnell, also from the Martyn Gregory Collection, sold at Christie's, London, on 24 March 2022, lot 37 (£1,386), and conveys the same sense of freshness and spontaneity which is evident in the present work.
