Circle of Sir Frank Brangwyn, RA RWS PRBA, British 1867-1956- Fishing nets to dry on the boats dried out; oil on board, bears inscription of initials ‘FB’ (lower right), 25 x 32 cm. ARR. Provenance: Anon. sale, Bonhams, London, 3 April 2012, lot 110, as 'Attributed to Frank Bramley' (£1,625). with Martyn Gregory, London [VH557]. Note: The present picture recalls the style of Sir Frank Brangwyn, who painted numerous views of ports and boats. Brangwyn was a hugely prolific and versatile artist, who created designs for stained glass, furniture, and mosaics, as well as numerous prints, watercolours, and oils, including large-scale murals. He was largely self-taught, although received some artistic training from Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo (1851-1942) and William Morris (1834-1896). His time in the workshop of the latter and his exposure to the Arts & Crafts Movement undoubtedly influenced his later approach. He travelled widely over the course of his career, depicting the landscapes, architecture, and people he encountered. Indeed, the present work recalls a work by Brangwyn which sold at Roseberys on 8 July 2026, lot 457, or another, depicting a 'ship in a squall', which sold at Bonhams, London, on 13 November 2014, lot 130.
