William Roxby Beverly, British 1810/11-1889- Figures crossing at a sandy bay; watercolour with scratching out on paper, 24.1 x 34.3 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 27 November 2003, lot 283 (£2,880). with Martyn Gregory, London [VG785]. Note: Willam Roxby Beverly, skilled painter and watercolourist of landscapes and maritime scenes, is mainly known as a theatrical scene painter. He worked in numerous stages in London and elswhere, such as Covent Garden, the Lyceum Theatre, Princess's Theatre, the Adelphi, Royal Court Theatre, and the Savoy. He exhibited his non-theatrical works at the Royal Manchester Institution, and at the Royal Academy in London. His oeuvre is close in style to the work of Romantic landscape painter Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1823), evoking the sublimity and grandeur of nature and the ocean, of which the present watercolour is a good example. The stillness of the present composition recalls the artist's watercolour, entitled 'A Hay Barge in a River Landscape', which sold at Dreweatts on 11 June 2025, lot 225 (£1,100 hammer).
