William Evans of Bristol, British 1809-1858- Sorrento; pencil and watercolour on paper, inscribed 'SORRENTO' (lower left), 18.5 x 13.5 cm. Exhibited: London, Martyn Gregory Gallery, 'William Evans of Bristol', 1987, cat. 49, no. 117. Provenance: with Martyn Gregory Gallery [VC 91]. Note: Born in Bristol, Evans was an early pupil of Francis Danby (1793-1861) and, in 1832-33 was part of a sketching club which also included William James Müller (1812-1845) and John Skinner Prout (1805-1876). He is particularly noted for his landscapes of North Wales, where he lived and worked for many years near Bettws-y-Coed, studying directly from nature, and this informed his other moniker, 'Welsh Evans'. After 1852 he travelled to Italy, visiting Genoa, Rome and Naples and the present work likely dates from this period. Evans was an Associate of the Old Society of Painters in Water-Colours and he exhibited a view of Sorrento at the Society of Painters in Water-Colours in 1854.
