Auguste Borget, French 1808-1877- Two Dutch landscapes: Dutch landscape with a windmill; and Dutch landscape with cattle and windmills; the first pencil and watercolour on paper with shaped corners, the second pencil on grey paper, the first signed 'Aug Borget' (lower left), the second inscribed and dated 'environs de Rotterdam / 1866' (lower centre), the first 8.7 x 14.7 cm., the second 10.9 x 15.7 cm., two (2). Provenance: with Martyn Gregory, London [VH290]. Note: Borget was best known for his drawings, watercolours and prints depicting his travels, particularly in China. He travelled extensively through North and South America, India and Southeast Asia, spending ten months in Canton, where he sketched with George Chinnery (1774–1852). His works are held in the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Honolulu Museum of Art, Musée Bertrand in Châteauroux, Musée de la Roche in Issoudun and the National Museum of Singapore. Although the present work depicts a Dutch landscape, its handling recalls Borget’s views of landscapes made during his travels. Comparable examples include Two Views near Arequipa, Peru, sold at Bonhams, London, 6 February 2019, lot 184 (£2,500), and a view of Macao, sold at Christie’s, London, 29 September 2011, lot 182 (£6,250).
