William Payne, British c.1760-c.1830- Moored vessel in an estuary; brown, blue, and grey wash on paper, 18.8 x 29.6 cm. Provenance: with Martyn Gregory, London [VH583]. Note: Plymouth-born Payne became one of the most successful drawing masters of his day, with his distinctive watercolour techniques well-suited to teaching. His pupils included John Glover (1767-1849), whose work certainly exhibits the influence of Payne's approach. Similar works by Payne include a Cornish view which sold at Christie's, London, on 3 July 2018, lot 132 (£4,375), or another which sold at the same rooms on 16 November 2006, lot 72 (£5,760).
