Robert Dighton, British 1752-1814- A pair of scenes depicting elegant young ladies: A young lady in a winter landscape wearing a bonnet and muff; and Fashionable young lady seated in an interior; each pen, ink and watercolour on paper, ovals, the first heightened with touches of white, the first inscribed 'Winter' (below the mount), the first 7.4 x 14.3 cm, the second 19.4 x 17 cm., two (2). Provenance: with Martyn Gregory, London [VC 687]. Note: Dighton was an English portrait painter, printmaker and caricaturist who trained at the Royal Academy Schools. From the 1790s he devoted himself largely to caricature, producing lively watercolours and etchings of figures from contemporary society, including lawyers, military officers, actors and country gentlemen. The present works are excellent examples of his characteristic style and recall his portrait of the Regency fashion icon Beau Brummell, sold at Bonhams, London, on 6 February 2007, lot 133 (£5,800 hammer).
