Wilhelm von Gegerfelt, Swedish 1844-1920- View of a figure crossing a bridge in a snowy winter landscape, at sunset; oil on panel, signed and dated 'W v Gegerfelt. 71' (lower right),26 x 38.9 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Von Gegerfelt studied at the Royal Danish Academy and the Royal Swedish Academy, before continuing his training in Düsseldorf. Along with Alfred Wahlberg (1834-1906) he was a prominent early proponent of the 'Modern Breakthrough' movement which promoted a naturalist approach in response to the Romantic tendencies which were dominant in 19th-century Nordic art. Although he was probably best-known for his views of Venice, similar country scenes include a work which sold at Bukowskis, Stockholm, on 30 November 2004, lot 151 (£7,248 hammer), or another atmospheric landscape which sold at the same rooms on 13 December 2016, lot 181 (£5,802).
