Stanislas Lépine, French 1835-1892- A landscape with two figures walking on a path; oil on panel, signed 'S. Lepine' (lower left), 14.9 x 23.6 cm. Provenance: (Possibly) Henry Rouart (according to an inscription on the verso). with Marlborough Fine Art Ltd., London. Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 23 September 2004, lot 3. Private Collection, UK. Note: Lépine was closely associated with his Impressionist contemporaries, participating in the first Impressionist exhibition at Nadars Galley in 1874 alongside artists such as Camille Pissarro (1830-1903), Claude Monet (1840-1926), Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and Paul Cezanne (1839-1906), amongst others. It was Jean-Baptiste-Camile-Corot (1796-1875), under whom Lépine studied, who is often understood to have had the greatest influence on the latter's style and choice of subject matter. The present composition is typical of Lépine, recalling comparable works which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 6 February 2013, lot 165 (£37,250), as well as another, of similar proportions, which sold at Artcurial, Paris, on 27 March 2018, lot 1 (€9,750).
