Carl Neumann, Danish 1833-1891- A foggy coastal landscape with boats and figures ashore; oil on canvas, indistinctly signed 'C. Neuma[...]' (lower left), bears an old label with printed inscription 'KJOBENHA[VN]' to the upper stretcher bar, 26.2 x 35 cm. Provenance: Private Collection. Note: Carl Neumann was part of the second generation of Danish Golden Age painters trained under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg (1783-1853). He traveled to Egypt, Turkey, and Syria, among other places. However, his main source of inspiration for his landscape and marine paintings was his native land, Denmark, and particularly the coast and small villages along the northern end of the Jutland peninsula. This oil presents pinprick holes in all four of its corners, which act as a fascinating testament to the painter's working process: he must have attached the piece of canvas (which has subsequently been mounted on a secondary canvas support and stretcher) with pins to a board or easel to paint freehand and possibly in open air. Neumann's 'Unloading hay bales on the Nile (1878)' sold at Sotheby's London on 28 April 2026 for £22,000 Hammer.
