Frederick William Jackson, RBA, British 1859-1918- View of a windmill in a landscape; oil on canvas, signed 'F. W. JACKSON' (lower left), 82 x 99.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Jackson was a Manchester artist who studied at the Oldham School of Art and Manchester Academy, as well as in Paris. He travelled widely, including to Italy and Morocco, which he depicted in a number of his paintings. Nevertheless, the British countryside was the subject of most of Jackson's works, as in the present painting, which recalls his similarly Impressionistic landscapes in Manchester Art Gallery [no.1918.10], Lotherton Hall, Leeds Museums [LEEAG.PA.1925.0091.SW], and Kirkleatham Museum [RECKH:1979.28]. A similarly peaceful pastoral scene, depicting cattle grazing in a landscape, sold at Bonhams, London, on 13 November 2018, lot 114 (£5,250).
