Albert Lynch, French 1860-1950- The Maiden of Spring; oil on canvas laid on board, inscribed 'A. Lynch' verso, 11.6 x 26.2 cm. Provenance: Anon. sale, Ader, Paris, 6 October 2017, lot 167. Note: Of German and Peruvian ancestry, Albert Lynch was born in Prussia but grew up in Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Orientalist Gabriel Ferrier (1847-1914), historical and portrait painter Henri Lehmann (1814-1882), and landscape and maritime artist Jules Achille Noël (1815-1881). Lynch soon started exhibiting at the Salon, where he would show his work for a great part of his life; in 1900 he was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle. His work focuses on portraits of women wearing ornamental costumes and ethereal dresses in the Belle Époque taste, even decades later. The present lot, delicate yet dynamic, is a sketch that might have been intended as a study for a bigger composition, with the figure's stance recalling that, for example, in a painting which sold at Bonhams, London, on 27 January 2011, 24, or also in his painting entitled 'Springtime' which sold at Christie's, London, on 23 January 2008, lot 19.
